Marbalonia

The City of Magic
by Richard Grzela Edited by Jim Butler

Population 36 million

The capital city of the eastern lands sits upon a beautiful lakefront on the south border. It is the largest city in the eastern continent as well the world. Marbalonia is a city so large that it has grown through history to encompass several smaller cities that have now become communities within the greater city as a whole. They are listed as follows: Prasil, Defin, Eventol, Bouyar, Gyre, Hylark, Brujo, Sayer.

The city is well placed to control industrial, military and agricultural populations and has a financial reach extending worldwide. Its influence has spread throughout the eastern continent and in some cases, beyond to surrounding islands as it continues to import and export industrial products that are modified to better meet the needs of the people.

Surrounded by high hills and having access to a great lake expands its influence to some degree in the fisheries as well as the preservation of the natural environment inside and beyond the great city's walls. Its palace grounds were designed on the spot where victory over the demons was officially won. It is home to the original bricks placed down by the little people over 50 million years ago.

70 million years prior to this, it was simply a meeting place and fortification for trading, before people agreed to turn it over to the first emperor as a gift. 20 million years after he accepted the generous gift, he took a wife and was believed to have died a season after the birth of his first son, during the time of peace.

The first emperor secretly watched generation after generation take control of a new era and beat back random groups of roaming demons. Though he watched in silence while suffering from a serious magical illness, he never did die, but continued to influence events with subtle actions to undermine the efforts of any remaining demons. A huge celebration erupted when a plebeian servant to the throne discovered him. Unfortunately the ruling family did not share the joy of the common population at the time. The royals, who were his direct descendants, began to plot his demise. The royals held many great debates and with consultation, the first emperor agreed to let the current family continue their rule over the people there by allowing himself to be an advisor. It was during this time the first; later to be given the title of Emperor vanished for good into the tomb of anarchy.

The short-lived celebration of the news caused an economic boom in the area. The news brought merchants, traders, skilled labour and craftsmen while increasing rural settlements. This in turn led to the annexation of more surrounding land to meet the growth demand of the population and lack of housing.

This was the time officially known as year one in the world calendar of events. It was a time worth marking, as it was when the city as the centre of the eastern land hit the one million population mark in the census. It also signified the news by word of merchant travelers, of an equally large city that was growing in the western lands.

What developed over time was a keen sense of anti-war propaganda that leaders of both major cities began to share. It was clear that neither side needed war and both felt a common bond in success and growth. This led to an increased supply chain for both cities as they continued to find ways to improve on things each produced. This led to a trade alliance between east and west. Marbalonia reached the 2 million population mark exactly one year later. It had separated its monarchy and government by year five. The first civic election was a huge success and allowed people more control over the direction of their own lives. The first governor was Eli Tesh, a former, well-known professor from the wizard university, who tried to seize control over the entire city by force. His rebellion and manipulation lasted only as long as he could continue his brutal reign. His tyranny ended in year eight. The collapse of the democratic structure caused the royal family to use military force to bring the nation city back into a harmonious rhythm. It was this bloodshed that strengthened the social view that a single strong ruler should guide the people. The emperor at the time disagreed. He declared the following statement in the political house:

"The future is what you make of it, not what is dictated by a leader. You choose your path for better or worse as you feel will best suit your lives. By majority choice you will regain your control of your future through your chosen leaders."

By year ten the royal family held the new civic elections and stood to receive the new leader of the people. The emperor imposed fines to all who dared refuse to place a ballot and even threatened to eradicate those from the city that chose to become repeat offenders. The threat was successful and the perfect balloting brought knight Omar Archaic Dorset to power as the first leading governor for the nation. He reigned over the political assembly until year fifty.

Sir Omar Archaic Dorset introduced solid trade internationally via waterways and fortified alliances with western islands, reinforcing the friendship between Circi-City in the west and Marbalonia in the east. He is also well known for his establishment of national Magic teleportation gates for fast logistics of people and resources in the land.

By year 100 the eastern lands had seen a huge industrial development in the areas of agriculture, shipping, clothing and potions. Foundries were built to meet the growth demands of the eastern world. The side effect of this ensured that all basic needs of the populations would be better met for the future.

By year 125 the population of Marbalonia had grown to five million and was officially named the capital of the eastern continent.

Marbalonia continued to function on basically magic, labour and primitive resources of wood, clay and water until the discovery of the first national mine. No major events came about until year 550. Then, a westerner by the name of Carlson Claims, who was well versed in mining, claimed his fortune and forever made a legendary company, Mark Claims Inc, which he named after his son. His huge discovery of fuel and valuable gems led Marbalonia to bring about new legislation that would limit the control a company had over national resources. It did not, however, stop the company from making trillions of dollars from the discovery.

This led to disputes between Circi-City and Marbalonia as Carlson used Circi-City funds to commission the exploration. While augments persisted, Mr. Claims paid the Circi-City the agreed 15% return on what he discovered and still ended up with more capital than both nations combined. He bartered to have homes in both cities for three generations of his family at locations of their choosing, along with fully funded education to all children bearing the Claims last name. This allowed both super cities to pull 50% returns from the mega mine leaving the remaining wealth to Claims and his company.

This new discovery brought about an unforeseen economic boom to both super cities. Both boasted populations of ten million and continued to grow. This mine also gave Marbalonia further influence over the technological wonder of Circi-City in the west.

In the year 625 the First World War erupted among civilized people. It was led by a naturalist by the name of Mikal Mazwada, a well-known woodsman who many believed to have magical influence over nature. It was during this time he was given the title Wood Warden for his aggressive protection of all natural land that was being defaced for resources. Marbalonia continued to expand its manufacturing to instant food, spell scrolls for battle, preserved food and equipment for home use.

Mikal Mazwada posed a constant threat against rural populations which caused the country citizens to move closer to the city. It was the strength of the city's economics and military that caused another boom in growth as the threat of the war began to spread. Marbalonia hit 17 million in size. So, pressured by the war by naturalists, Marbalonia suffered from a magical depression in the year 632 causing many wizards to pool energies just to hold the battlefront against Mikal Mazwada and his wood wardens who could tap the magic from the land directly.

Because of the size of Marbalonia, the stress of limited magic was less felt in the super city then it was in the smaller cities in the east. This was in part due to the diversification of assets and equipment that allowed the city to continue with moderate losses all around.

In the year 678, Marbalonia's governor, Lily Luppy met with the Wood Warden, Mikal Mazwada and convinced him to join her in the palace of the emperor to negotiate a treaty. This lucky encounter served to placate the angry naturalist who was still building membership, possibly gaining ground and threatening a continuation of the world war.

In 679 Lily Luppy successfully negotiated with the naturalist and Mikal Mazwada to have them on for future projects to improve developments in the city and surrounding lands. This led to the first protected Royal Park and natural area surrounding the city. This new way of thinking encouraged wizards, alchemists and merchants, who then further improved their own operations to the full satisfaction of the naturalists. Marbalonia welcomed the new ideas and hit 22 million in population, thanks to natural life incorporation in the city.

Marbalonia then had full control over advertisements and media to ensure messages of support are shared with all citizens.

The city itself is also surrounded by steep hills with a shoreline in the southeast end of the city. This waterfront is home to the biggest boat city in the world. Floating homes sheltered fishermen and women who were predominantly naturalist, with 25% claiming Marbalonian citizenship. The rest of the boat city population lived as free people with no loyalties to any group. A 45 kilometer harbour linked the city to the water. This huge lake had several tributaries feeding into it that were well hidden and unknown to the general public outside the boat city community. These waterways added to north/south trade and allowed for a mobile garrison to patrol the waters for threats entering from the Deep South direction.

In the year 1000, these waterways played a major role in transportation to inland locations that carried huge amounts of goods that bottlenecked teleportation gates to a near standstill. By the year 1100, major retailing, finance and industrial headquarters built pillars of skyscrapers to better serve the huge population around them.

Between the years 1300 and 1430 the lifestyles of the populations began to really change, as naturalists became more involved in development and making the lands more hospitable and enjoyable for all living creatures. Industry began to take leading roles of environmental integration and reforms until the late 1400's, bringing rise to a naturalist party, which formed a government committee to improve and approve all developments. In the year 1502 a naturalist party became a true political player in the government of Marbalonia and won their first seat in the political house.

It was in the year 1887 that historical works of art were erected in honour of the royal family. It has been called the time of the enlightened emperor. Often referred to as 'the time of the enlightened emperor', it commemorated the heroes of the nation from the past to the present. In true magical fashion, every statue (also called golem statues) was an animated automaton powered by magic. It wasn't until the uprising in year 1905 did the general population realize that the statues also doubled as security centurions for the city.

In the year 1906 a peaceful group of boat people demanded true independence from the city and were granted amnesty from all taxes and services so long as they chose to live free. This led to another boom in population as more people took to the lake for a boat life. It was in 1935 that the emperor's home was rebuilt and restored to its full glory. In addition to the architecture duplications, cleaning and replacement, a complete overhaul of modern amenities were put in to accommodate life in the times of the modern era. This allowed for a more comfortable stay for dignitaries and politicians from abroad. This project was undertaken with overwhelming approval from the public, who recognized that the royals had, for so long, lived little better than the poorest of the people as far as what amenities were available to them.
